In an
industry once dominated by men, women are beginning to blossom and prove that
they can stand shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts. One of such
women is DJ Nana. People started paying attention to DJ Nana when she came out
tops to win the first everAirtel and Barcaddi Cool FM DJ
Competition.
Under the
tutelage of DJ Jimmy Jatt, she honed her skills and
was nominated in the maiden edition of African Global DJs’ Award, for the best
female DJ category in 2013.
Nana gets mixed reactions, when she is being introduced
as a female DJ. “I have gotten
different impressions from people. Some get
excited seeing me handle their parties while some are disgusted when my name is
mentioned. To them, a lady DJ would not give them what they wanted.
Some would
look down on me because they have this notion that a female DJ cannot be good.
But I tell you, we have a whole lot of successful female DJs today doing the womenfolk’s
proud. Above all, a lot of people do appreciate me and say that it is inspiring
to see a female DJ performing so well.” She recently collaborated on a song
with Omawunmi,titled Know.
